Why I love this lead:
I love this lead because E.B. White makes me care so much for young Fern from the first few lines of the story. Immediatly I wonder right along with Fern where her father is going with his ax. I feel so sorry for her mother. It feels like she doesn't want to have to tell 8 year old Fern that her father is taking the ax to a cute little baby pig. By including the action of setting the table for breakfast I am able to create a picture in my mind in the first few lines of the book. I cannot imagine anyone reading the first page of this book and not wanting to read on.
